"One of the highlights of this year is the track I did with Tiësto, 'Zero 76', and because of that, we did a whole tour together in the United States." - www.djmag.com

Tiësto – The Intimate Experience: RECAP

11.09.11

On Thursday, November 3, 2011, the World’s Greatest DJ graced the main stage of Playhouse once again. Since his first appearance this year for Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival Pre-Party back in June, the international legend returned as the “Dutch born. Globally inspired.” talent for this Heineken sponsored event. Tiësto played for a sold out Hollywood crowd of which included a who’s who of fellow DJs and celebrities. Several cast members from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars were in attendance. Maxim Chmerkovskiy, Derek Hough and Rob Kardashian were spotted dancing at a VIP booth with friends. One-third of Swedish House Mafia, Sebastian Ingrosso, and their protégé Alesso even stopped by to support. However, little did we know that all three, Tiësto, Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso would hop onto the decks for s triple threat performance. Suffice it say, that all had the club going “Maximal Crazy.” Click here for the video.

The 2:00 AM Surprises – Afrojack, Chuckie and Cedric Gervais

08.08.11

Playhouse has built quite a reputation over the past two years, since its establishment on the boulevard in the summer of 2009. By allowing guests to party until 4:00 AM, it’s a known fact that if you decide to go out in Hollywood, you will one way or another end your night at Playhouse for some after hours partying.

In recent weeks, those 2 extra hours of partying, provided that every other bar and club in Hollywood closes at 2:00 AM, have brought about some very special surprise guests and performances. On Thursday, August 4, 2011, the weekend started off with SKAM Artist DJ Ross One headlining in the main room. At around 2:00 AM, the “Take Over Control” mastermind, Afrojack, took the main stage for an impromptu performance after playing a sold out show at the Music Box. It was certainly a night of mayhem as a single tweet from Afrojack, about his special guest appearance, resulted in hundreds of people spilling out onto the boulevard as they attempted to get into the club.

A few days later, British talent, Michael Woods graced the stage for Monday Social. As 2:00 AM approached, Dirty Dutch genius, Chuckie, and Miami’s very own Cedric Gervias hopped on for a special closing set. The capacity-filled room erupted in excitement as the party continued until the very last moments we were open.

Suffice it to say, if you come to Playhouse, it’s probably a good idea to stay until we close at 4 AM!

If you missed it, check out some footage below: Click here

Dada Life makes Monday Social go B-A-N-A-N-A-S!

08.01.11

On July 11, 2011, Monday Social was taken over by the Swedish duo Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, better known as Dada Life. What started off as an exclusive yellow carpet affair, quickly transformed into a night of partying mayhem as the banana eating, champagne loving duo “unleashed the f***ing dada.” Playing for a sold out room, Dada Life brought out the party animal in everyone in attendance. Suffice it say, after all the peeled bananas and sprayed champagne, everyone who made it out that night won’t be forgetting it anytime soon!

Playhouse Celebrates 2 Years of Stealing the Hollywood Scene

07.07.11

Back in July of 2009, a historical landmark of Hollywood known as the Fox Theater reopened its doors as a world-class entertainment venue. The old theater’s transformation brought about visually enticing décor, Cirque du Soleil style acts and notable international talents ranging from Tiësto to Lil Wayne. Reigning as one of the premier nightlife retreats in Los Angeles, this weekend Playhouse Hollywood celebrates its monumental 2 Year Anniversary.

With this extraordinary occasion upon us, we’ve planned a weekend long celebration featuring acts by Lil Jon, Cedric Gervais and Party Crash (Ruckus & Cory Enemy)! Suffice it to say, this is “Not Your Typical One Night Stand” as we have several surprises in store for you. So join us, as we commemorate 2 years of stealing the Hollywood nightlife scene and continue to do so in superlative fashion.

SHARAM brings “Fun” to Playhouse this Sunday!

06.19.11

Top international musical talent, SHARAM, presents an exclusive Single Release Party this Sunday, June 19th for his new track “God Always.” Coming off the success of his single “Fun,” the collaboration with familiar Deep Dish voice, Anousheh Khalili, has been widely supported by his colleagues and was featured on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show for weeks! If you haven’t already seen the music video for “Fun,” you can check out it below:

The esthetic behind the video for “Fun” pays homage to the great 1968 film, Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen. According to an interview conducted by DJ Mag with Sharam about his new album Speed:

As the name of the album suggests, cars, particularly cars from the late ‘60s/early ‘70s play a great role with Steve McQueen being the central part of that inspiration, via his Bullitt and Le Mans movies. I’ve always been a car guy, I love watching movies from that era. The car-spotting part provides a nice background story. I’ve always tried to feature vintage cars in the videos I’m involved with when possible. The videos for ‘Flashdance’, ‘Say Hello’, ‘Sacramento’ and ‘PATT’ all had vintage cars in them. For the ‘Fun’ video I wanted to do something a little bigger to tie it to the album’s theme so remaking the famous Bullitt chase scene appealed to me greatly. I knew it was going to be a huge challenge pulling it off with budget restrictions that are the norm these days from an independent dance artist perspective but I’m happy we could pull it off keeping the integrity of the original chase in place. We shot the video street-by-street following the path of the original chase in Bullitt. Of course we couldn’t do the end’s car explosion, not to mention a ten minute chase, so we had to creatively cut the whole thing short and keep it under four minutes.

Monday Night Social: 15 Year Anniversary w/ Sander van Doorn

06.09.11

This past Monday, June 6, 2011, we celebrated Monday Social’s 15th Anniversary with special guest Sander van Doorn. Ranked as the No. 12 DJ in world, Sander van Doorn played for a sold out Hollywood crowd that, suffice it say, partied from “Dusk till Doorn.” Freddy Be and Mick Cole, the creators behind Monday Social, have established an electronic music staple in Los Angeles considering Monday Social hails as the longest club night promotion to ever exist in the US. Hence, it was only worth of an LA Times article written by Charlie Amter, whom did a feature on the night’s lasting success.

DJ Politik - Residency 2011

03.09.11

We sat down with DJ Politik to see what he had to say about his new 2011 Residency at Playhouse Hollywood. Here's what we got out of him: How do you usually prepare for DJ gigs? Describe some of your thoughts and emotions before going on. My preparations depend on the type of venue. A club like Playhouse is a high energy Vegas style club, so I like to come in with a lot of energy, making sure the crowds into it, and I?ll usually get on the mic. Mentally, you just have to be prepared to have a crazy night and have fun, that?s really important. You?ve been traveling and playing, both around the country and internationally recently. Tell us about some of those experiences. Vegas is always fun for me. I?m still young. I?m only 22. So it?s still new to me the whole aspect of partying and playing till 6AM. Miami is also very different. There?s a lot of energy in Miami. Everyone loves to party there. My Asia tour was the most eye opening experience because it was my first time to the Far East. I had gigs in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taipei. It was a really good experience for me. In Asia, however, their music tastes are a little outdated. It was still a lot of fun and it?s less pretentious than LA, Vegas, or Miami. People aren?t trying to be cool. They are at the club to drink and have a good time. That alone made it so much more memorable, seeing everyone have the time of their lives while playing my sets. Being an LA native, what sets the nightlife scene in LA apart from those in other cities? LA is really different overall. A big thing is that clubs close at 2AM. Whenever I play a set, I have to squeeze everything in a 2 or 3 hour span in terms of music. As for the people, everyone is just beautiful here. It?s where Hollywood?s finest come out to play. The crowd is what sets this city apart from others. You?ve been spinning at Playhouse since its opening in July 2009. How does it feel to have a residency in 2011? It?s really fulfilling for me to have a residency at Playhouse this year. I started here in 2009 playing upstairs in the balcony and to have finally worked my way into the main room is surreal. I love spinning at Playhouse because of the unique environment. I mean there?s no other club in LA that you can get loose as a DJ. The lighting, sound, and the attitude that people have when they walk through the door; they know that they came to party. They?re not here to stand around and look cool. People don?t come wearing their expensive attire to make sure everyone sees them. That?s the not the case here. It?s about having a good time. Youtube Link: CLICK HERE

Manufactured Superstars' Residency Launch Recap!

01.26.11

After the debut of Manufactured Superstars new residency, Space Odyssey, we're proud to report that our first mission was a SUCCESS! The commanding DJ duo played for a capacity filled room of which included the likes of Paris Hilton and apl.de.ap from the Black Eyed Peas.

During an interview conducted with pair that make up Manufactured Superstars, Brad Roulier and Shawn Sabo, we were excited to hear what they had to say about their new residency in LA and plans for 2011.

Q: What sets Playhouse apart from other venues in the US?

Brad: We love the crowd in LA. LA is known for big raves, having an underground scene and Hollywood clubs and Playhouse is kind of a mix mash of all of them. The room holds about a thousand people and it just goes off! The dance floor is absolutely ballistic, but it still has the Hollywood element of several VIPs and celebrities coming in. It also has one of the best sound systems which makes the dance floor really go off! It's different and unique for a Hollywood club.

Shawn: There's just a great energy! Rob and the boys that run the place, I've been friends with Rob Vinokur since Crobar - New York and have known him for years. He's a great owner and operator and it's just a really fun place to play. As Brad was saying, the sound system is just phenomenal.

Brad: Yeah! We're partial to Funktion One so we love Funktion One sound!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with Space Odyssey at Playhouse?

Shawn: Playhouse is just a fun room and to get to play a room that size, you can really interact with the crowd. If you're playing for a crowd of a couple thousand people it's really hard to see everybody. Playhouse is just a unique room you and can make eye contact with the people on the dance floor. There's just a really good energy.

Brad: The Space Odyssey theme is all for fun. We wear the spacesuits but with the go-go dancers and the staff dressed up as well, it's just kind of fun and goofy. We don't take ourselves too seriously. The way we see it is it's a Friday night in Hollywood, let's have a party and let's do this! It's not too serious, just a lot of fun.

Shawn: We're really excited to have all the opportunities that we have. To be able to work with [Playhouse] and to really do what is our dream. Right now I'm living my dream and I'm sure Brad is as well.

Q: How does your DJ schedule affect your work on other ventures such as Beatport?

Brad: It's planned out a lot further in advance which makes it a lot easier. We know where we're going to be and when we're going to be there. Most of our dates for XS are planned for the entire year and it's the same thing for Playhouse and the big festivals. These promoters are taking us very seriously. It's not like, 'We want to try and book you in two weeks.' They're investing really decent marketing into us and a lot of time, so we get to promote each event on our side in addition to what they're doing on their end. Having a consistent theme will allow us to put on better shows because we're used to the room, the sound system and we're used to what the crowd is like. So it gives us the ability to make adjustments and get better and better for the club, the audience, and ultimately better for us. It just works out really well to be able to have these residencies.

Shawn: Just the fact of having a residency, being able to work with the team at Playhouse and do the Space Odyssey theme with everyone dressed up and the club decorated is awesome. They're building us a custom DJ booth that looks like a spaceship for our next show in March. [This residency] just allows us to do a cooler thing that we couldn't do on an in-and-out show. I mean if we are in a city for 12 hours you show up and deal with what the club's got, but we're really working on a full program with Alex Orlovsky (Director of Marketing at Playhouse). With the promo videos that we've been doing, we?re really trying to build up something that is fun and different for people that love electronic music.

Brad: We'd like to give a shout out to our friends at Native Instruments. They're US headquarters is in Los Angeles. We get to have some of their equipment permanently installed at Playhouse that we don't have to travel with and we can even leave a spacesuit here. It's one less thing we have to worry about with our busy schedules when have all the gear that we want. The sound system is exactly the way we want it. The promotion is the way we want it. It's just a win-win situation for everyone and I think that's why you're seeing so many residency pop up all over the place this year, at least in America.

Q: What are your thoughts on the electronic music scene in LA?

Brad: I think it's really funny that all the promoters that were on the DJ Vice and DJ AM mash-up tip are now all about going to Ibiza, house music, tech house, and techno. They were playing dubstep at a Hollywood club when I was here about three or four weeks ago. I was thinking to myself, 'Are you kidding me? Playing dubstep at a Hollywood club? What's going on?' People in America and those particularly on the west coast are getting bored with mainstream pop culture. Dance music is international; it's the world's music. It's popular from Australia to Germany to France and the UK. The music has always been popular in America, but not in the way of what it's starting to do right now. It's really refreshing and obviously as Beatport we love it. The more dance music that's being played, the more DJs there are and that's great for us. I just think that it's a really exciting opportunity. There's a lot of money being made right now by clubs and everybody is jumping on this bandwagon. However the people over at Playhouse and Insomniac have always been down with house music for more than 10 years. That's where our heart is, with the people that have always been all about it and for the people that are enjoying it now it's cool, come aboard and have fun but don't ruin it.

Shawn: It's awesome to see house music really take off in America over the last 2 years. There are probably 10 clubs that will be playing house music tonight in LA, but 3 or 4 years ago it would have been the complete opposite where there would have been only one and 10 clubs playing hip-hop. It's cool to see America catching up to the UK and the rest of Europe and really start to rock out. The energy is just so much better in a dance club than a hip-hop club. The people are always ready to have fun and party. At 128 bpm, there's really something natural about partying to that music; jumping up and down and people really have a good time. It's fun to be a part of that.

Q: Who are some are your favorite upcoming DJs/producers?

Shawn: I think Avicii is going to be another rising star coming up this year and who hasn't heard of Afrojack.

Brad: That's an unfair question. We're Switzerland. For any producer that's making house music, tech house, techno, drum & bass or dubstep, just keep on making your music and people will continue to enjoy it. These kids that are younger, 19 and 20 years old; the production that's coming out from these studios are unbelievable. We're just completely embracing all of it.

Q: Do you have any collaborations planned with other artists for 2011?

Shawn: Well we're working on an album right now and hopefully it will be out in August. We?ll have a couple of singles drop in between now and then. So we have a lot of stuff going on the production front. Some things we can talk about and some things we can't talk about.

Brad: We have a couple of really good remixes featuring some well known artists. We're breaking out some new vocalists that no one's ever heard of before and using some vocalists that are very well known. We're all about come do a track with us and we want to do a remix for you. That's our culture. We like to share with people and make music that girls like.

Thanks Manufactured Superstars! See you March 4, 2011 for the next Space Odyssey!

New Year's Eve 2011: Midnight in Paris w/ Cedric Gervais

12.21.10

After last year's unforgettable New York Nights: Black and White Ball, we here at Playhouse figured what better way to ring in the New Year than in the City of Lights. For this year's countdown to 2011, Playhouse will be completely transformed and the celebration shall take place under the skies of Paris! In addition to all the Parisian surprises we have planned, the music for the evening will be provided by none other than the sensationally talented DJ and a producer: Cedric Gervais! Originally born in Marseilles, Cedric Gervais has claimed Miami as his adopted home and has held residencies at Crobar and the world famous Nikki Beach, before taking over the Space Terrace. Cedric's presence at the Space Terrace was felt immediately as people in the thousands began lining up to witness him devastate the after-hours scene and this New Year's Eve, such devastation come to Playhouse Hollywood.

Playhouse x Marshall Barnes = Deadmau5 Tribute

08.03.10

I'm sure most of you have already caught wind of the unfortunate events that occurred this past weekend to one of world's top DJs: Deadmau5. While performing at 9:30 Club in DC, Deadmau5 collapsed and suffered from 'exhaustion and vomiting' as stated on his website. After being cautiously advised by doctors that treated him after the incident, Deadmau5 has consequently cancelled nine upcoming shows. Who said living the life of a world-class DJ was all fun and games?

On behalf of The Playhouse Family we'd like to wish Joel a fast and healthy recovery. This past Saturday, DJ Marshall Barnes performed a little tribute to Deadmau5 by cranking out some of his tracks on our Funktion One sound system and sported a rather impressive replica of the infamous mau5 head.
